We operate energy facilities in communities across Europe and Russia. We have a positive impact on these communities by hiring local people, buying from local suppliers, strengthening local infrastructure, protecting natural landscapes and habitats, and being actively involved in community life. The trust of these communities – and of our customers, our employees, and the general public – is essential for us to be able to do our job well.
Compliance, which consists of all measures aimed at ensuring that statutory provisions and internal company policies are abided by, is the foundation of mutual trust. With the introduction of a Compliance Management System we have taken significant measures to ensure compliant behavior of our all our managers and employees, at home and abroad, at any time.
Also, more particularly, our stakeholders' trust in our sustainability performance enables us to retain our license to build, operate, innovate, and grow in a world increasingly shaped by sustainability issues.
Compliance, which consists of all measures aimed at ensuring that statutory provisions and internal company policies are abided by, is a component of good corporate governance and for the Uniper SE board constitutes a central management responsibility.
We are committed to demonstrating leadership in health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) management and ensuring a culture of continuous improvement that we can be proud of.
Everyone who acts on behalf of Uniper, anywhere in the world, is responsible for HSSE. Our objective is to avoid all accidents. Meeting this commitment is a primary line-management objective and the individual and collective responsibility of all our employees. We work tirelessly to ensure that all incidents and near misses are reported and rigorously investigated to minimize and eliminate future risks.
HSSE and conducting our business responsibly are our highest priority. We strongly believe our environment and society as a whole benefits from this leadership.
We aim for all of our suppliers to meet our standards for human rights, workers’ rights, environmental protection, and business ethics. These standards are codified in our Responsible Procurement Policy. We monitor compliance in a variety of ways, including through on-site audits of our major fuel suppliers. We also partner with other energy companies in the Bettercoal Initiative, whose purpose is to establish common standards for and to continually improve the safety and environmental performance in coal sourcing.
