Uniper operates 22 run-of-river power plants on the River Lech as well as the Roßhaupten storage power plant (in German) on Lake Forggen, which, with a total capacity of around 260 megawatts, generate around 1.1 billion kilowatt hours of environmentally friendly electricity per year. This means that around 366,000 households can be supplied with electricity and around 634,000 tons of the harmful greenhouse gas CO2 can be saved.

Overview of the power plants within the Lech hydropower group

The barrages blend in well with the landscape. Large areas around the power plants are now first-class nature reserves with an inestimable value for both people and nature. The construction of the hydropower plants created new ecosystems, new habitats for flora and fauna. In close coordination with the nature conservation authorities, Uniper supports the maintenance and expansion of these ecologically valuable retreats for animals and plants.

Lech: fish ledder at Kaufering power plant

By specifically adjusting the groundwater level, we preserve riparian forests that accompany rivers. By delineating recreation areas, we protect ecological priority areas. And by expanding the "water-land" transition zone and creating islands, bays, ditches and shallow water zones, we are shaping water areas according to ecological principles. At the same time, we regenerate biotopes by creating ponds in the floodplain and ensure generous new plantings in the vicinity of reservoirs.
