Engineering a skilled workforce for the future

Summary

Industry experience, realistic practical skills and flexibility: that's how our Engineering Academy supports businesses in getting their workforce to excel

Delivering in the region of 600 courses per year for 4000 delegates, plus supporting the growth of more than 70 apprentices through its award winning apprenticeship programme, Uniper’s Engineering Academy in Nottinghamshire is playing a key role in developing engineers of the future. “We understand that industry is constantly evolving, requiring a regular review of workplace competence to ensure a qualified and effective workforce. That is why we evolve and innovate new course material as well as ensure the ability to tailor our courses to customer needs”, explained Nick Booth, Head of Uniper’s Engineering Academy. Based on over a decade’s experience in power generation and energy distribution as well as long-standing relationships with energy intensive manufacturing and process production customers, the Uniper Engineering Academy has created a suite of courses that support companies with known challenges and continuously adds to them as new challenges unfold.

Uniper’s Engineering Academy offers a broad portfolio of training courses which provide a deepening of theoretical knowledge; many of which include “hands on” practical skills which are typically delivered at our purpose built facility. Located in Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire, it consists of several engineering workshops, an 11kV ‘live’ HV network with 7 substations, switch rooms and power plant. If travel is an issue then some of the courses can take place on the attendees’ own company site. To deliver outstanding results, Uniper works closely with companies to ensure that their specific requirements are implemented into courses where required. The Academy takes care to convey a personal touch by tailoring parts to each individual business, providing customers with a truly bespoke approach.

Wide portfolio of courses

With a broad selection of training courses, Uniper’s Engineering Academy can support in many ways. The “Asset Risk Management” courses have been created to raise the profile of effective asset management and plant integrity as well as process and plant safety management. “It is not only about gaining plant or process knowledge, it’s about understanding and raising awareness of potential failures and elements which can lead to high consequences if overlooked or misunderstood”, Nick Booth explained.

Courses in the area of “Power Plant Operations” provide a thorough and complete understanding of plant capabilities and risks; participants can even practice their operations skills on simulators. Since the global move to renewable energy, we have developed an operational safety course to support staff who are required to operate wind farms, providing them with an awareness of their legal obligations and safe systems of work. Uniper’s “High Voltage Operations courses are highly valued thanks to the unique live 11kV network which allow engineers to practice what they have learnt in realistic scenarios. By carrying out practical switching activities in a safe training environment, individuals are able to learn the dangers of their work without the risk of being harmed.

The “Low Voltage Electrical courses are catered to electricians, who require theoretical updates or non-electrical staff who are required to learn practical skills so that they understand how to work on and around electrical machines and equipment.

Due to Uniper’s extensive experience, the academy has created courses to develop the skills of technicians in control, instrumentation and mechanical maintenance. Our Control and Instrumentation” (C&I) training courses teach participants the essentials of what’s required to calibrate equipment and how to interpret readings and measurements. The Engineering Academy enables maintenance personnel to carry out commissioning, calibration and maintenance of the typical devices used for measurement and control in industrial systems.

Finally, with such a strong focus within Uniper on the wellbeing of its workforce, the Engineering Academy has a variety of training courses in the area of “Health and Safety”. Interactivity is a key theme for these courses to ensure that the learning points have a long lasting impact for attendees to take back and implement at their workplace.

Hi, I work at Tronox located near Grimsby and I wondered what HV courses you deliver. We currently use Faraday in Teeside for things such as Protection and switching course. Is this something you cater for?

We have a requirement to complete some basic E&I training and i had previously found a course that you offered but i cannot seem to find this online anymore and the link has expired. Do you still offer this course? or anything similar?

Thanks Matt

Hello, I am enquiring whether you are running your HV operations courses, I have a number of Control room staff, who will also be required to carry out remote HV operations under our operational safety Rules. Having been on your HV operations course previously, I think it will provide a useful background for my team. Regards, Martin Sutherland, Operations Manager, Beatrice Offshore Windfarm
