Münster district government issues permit to Datteln 4

The Münster district government today issued the emission-control permit to Datteln 4, a high-efficiency hard-coal-fired generating unit located on the Dortmund-Ems canal in North Rhine-Westphalia. The permit will make it possible for construction work to be completed and for the unit to enter service.

More than 1,000 construction personnel are currently at work on the site. Some construction activities recommenced in March 2016 after the issuance of a permission for an early commencement of construction works. Although the generating unit itself is largely completed, a number of ancillary facilities must still be built or completed. These include the fuel storage facility, the conveyor system, and the equipment to unload coal barges and load by-products.

“I’m pleased by this decision, which comes at the start of the new year,” Uniper Chief Operating Officer Eckhardt Rümmler said. “It’s a positive signal for Datteln 4, whose significance extends well beyond the region. In part, the permit is the result of a long and intensive dialog with the people and decision-makers of the region. We aim for Datteln 4 to begin providing our customers with a reliable supply of district heating and electricity as soon as possible.”

Background

Datteln 4 is a hard-coal-fired generating unit that will produce both electricity and heat. It will have a net electric capacity of 1,050 megawatts and be up to 60-percent fuel efficient when cogenerating heat, making it one of the world’s most technically advanced and efficient units of its type. Datteln 4 will generate electricity for the rail system and other customers. It will also supply district heating to more than 100,000 households in the Datteln area. The new generating unit will replace a number of older Uniper units in the region.
