One day with… Agyapomaa Boateng, Condition Monitoring Intern

Summary

Get to know new topics and surpass yourself as a placement student

Agyapomaa Boateng, also called AJ by her colleagues, has supported Uniper’s Asset Performance team as a Condition Monitoring Intern for seven months already. In her daily work routine, the young Chemical Engineering student maintains the systems the team uses for monitoring different power plants and investigates potential causes for changes in data. “Next to my main tasks, I work on many different projects in the background”, Agyapomaa explained.

“These projects mainly focus on a field I did not expect I would be able to work on before my placement: coding. But the team was always there for me, my colleagues helped me and answered all my questions. I have increased my pace and now I feel much more confident with the subject.” Her proudest achievement so far has been “Taking part in a hackathon to produce a piece of code that uses an algorithm to predict the maximum Electrical Output for a plant.”

What initially seemed like a challenge turned into enthusiasm: “I would definitely like to keep on the track of coding. For my future, I wish to work in an industry that has to do with decarbonization and renewable energy – but using coding to support”, AJ said.

Our decarbonization strategy was a decisive reason when she chose Uniper for her placement – she identified with the values of our company right from the beginning. “In addition to the sustainable strategy, the projects Uniper is working on convinced me. The company keeps on changing and innovating. I liked the thought of working in a company that pushes me”, she explained.

Agyapomaa’s tips for everyone who is starting a placement in a new company: “Ask questions. Everyone is aware of the fact that you are there to learn. Don’t be shy, reach out to people who might be able to support you.” At Uniper, AJ made good experiences and got to know the helpfulness of our employees. “Especially my manager, who is very focused on ensuring that I am getting the best out of my placement. I am never bored; I always have projects to make good progress and surpass myself.”
