One day with… Mark on the topic of gas storage facilities

Summary

Further training at the London Business School — put into practice at Uniper

For Mark Wesemann, Manager Storage Integrity and Development Projects at Uniper, no two days are the same. "That's exactly what makes my job at Uniper so exciting," he explains. "I deal with a variety of exciting issues relating to gas storage facilities and act as an interface between different departments, for example between technology and risk management". In the morning, Mark delivers a risk assessment for a compressor failure, by noon he is already sitting in on a virtual meeting on the installation and use of photovoltaic systems for gas storage facilities, and in the evening he gives an update on the future reduction of methane emissions.

"Cooperation between all employees at Uniper, from all manner of different disciplines, is absolutely essential and works very well. Although I am not an expert on compressor failure, I can discuss the issue with a qualified colleague from my perspective so that together we can work to determine a suitable risk assessment. Everyone tries to understand and respond to each other as best they can. With our openness and acceptance, we live the Uniper way — this is clearly reflected in our excellent cooperation," says Mark, explaining what he finds particularly fascinating about working at Uniper.

Every year, we offer employees a wide range of training opportunities that help them develop all kinds of skills— whether technical, rhetorical or collaborative. "This year, I chose the ‘Sustainability Leadership and Corporate Responsibility’ course at London Business School," says Mark. "In my role, I integrate numerous sustainability-related topics into my responsibilities, especially methane emissions." During the course, he not only learned a lot about the challenges of sustainability efforts, but also how to transform them into his own professional advantage. "The course opened my eyes and showed me how well Uniper is already positioned," says Mark. "In discussions around the topic with other students, I was proud to work for Uniper and came to appreciate even more the work of my colleagues, who work hard every day to develop new sustainability concepts".

As an energy company, there are a large number of possible measures we can take to achieve the major goal of CO2 neutrality by 2035. At London Business School, Mark was able to draw from a variety of perspectives to identify which of these are top priorities and need to be addressed first to get the process moving. "I act as a kind of bridge between strategy and project and can now link the two components even better," explains Mark. "Now I can weigh up different ideas together with technical experts and make statements about which ones will be the most sustainable in the long term. I can only highly recommend always taking advantage of opportunities for further training when they are offered."
