One day with… our intern Samuel

Summary

Putting theoretical knowledge from university into practice

Since the 21-year-old Samuel Brown has started his internship at our Holford Gas Storage site in July, no day has been like the other: “Some days, I spend a lot of my time in the office working on a modelling and simulation project or doing calculations. On other days I am at the site learning all the different processes or doing a survey to improve operations”, said Samuel.

Right after finishing the third year of his studies in Chemical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, he’s looking forward to putting all of his theoretical knowledge into practice and helping to solve real-world problems. He is learning everything about the conversion of the current gas system to transport hydrogen. That’s where his motivation comes from: “I am quite enthusiastic about renewable energy and reducing the carbon footprint. The move towards hydrogen is a massive step forward and I wanted to be part of it as soon as possible. The internship in Process Engineering at Uniper matches my career goals for the future and gives me the opportunity to make a contribution.”

During his time at Uniper, Samuel is able to expand his knowledge beyond what’s possible to being taught in a classroom. “I am an intern and obviously always open to learn completely new things. It’s a lot different working with ideal data at university and using real time data from a site – sometimes, it is challenging, but I always enjoy it. It is great what kind of various competencies our team offers to improve my knowledge.

Working closely together with different members of the team and learning new skills from our engineers or our technicians is very exciting”, said Samuel. His tip for other students: “When you start a new job, be enthusiastic about what you are doing every day and make sure that you show an interest in everything. The whole time you spend at your company is a big learning experience – therefore, ask as many questions as you possibly can. I would recommend an internship at Uniper to anyone who is willing to learn, to make a change and get a lot of great experiences in a very welcoming team.”
