One day with… Trainee Colin

Summary

Design your learning pathway independently with the Uniper Trainee Program

"Moving to a new department within Uniper as part of the trainee program means having to say goodbye to another team. With both a smile and a heavy heart, it's now time to move on to the final stage, and I've already gained so much experience," explains Colin Grimm, a former business administration student with mixed feelings about his move from Digital Trading to the Business Transformation Management team. Yet this is precisely what makes the two-year trainee program at Uniper so exciting for him: the freedom trainees have to shape their own path and the flexibility to spend three to six months in one department and then gain insight into a different one of their own choosing.

Colin joined the program at the age of 24, starting in the Sales Department, within Digital Business. From there, he moved on to Asset IT. His third stop was then in Digital Trading, where, over the past few months, he has independently managed the Digital Skills Compass project and has taken over responsibility for it. "A lot of trust has been placed in me, so I've been able to test my skills in a completely new area, make mistakes and learn from them. My project and stakeholder management skills have improved greatly as a result. This was my first time leading a project independently and putting together a team of external consultants and internal experts on the business," says Colin, describing his learning-by-doing process. The aim of the project was to develop a modern, future-oriented learning program to actively support the digital transformation of Uniper's trading business. In the process, they worked closely with all relevant trading areas and digital experts.

Uniper trainees also receive secondary support in the form of training sessions. During workshops, they get to meet other trainees and employees from different teams and acquire skills in a variety of areas. "Despite Covid-19, we can still take part in several training sessions — virtually, of course. My home office setup has been running smoothly for over a year now," says Colin. "I can picture myself staying with Uniper in the future. Project management, either in a digital or transformation environment, appeals to me the most due to the positive experiences I've already been able to gain in that area independently over the last six months."
