Project Done — Award for Our "Transparency Team at BGRES-3 Project"

Summary

Early recognition of problems thanks to transparent reporting during sophisticated power unit repair works

The complex repair works at the Berozovskaya GRES power unit 3 in Siberia have been successfully completed. The unit 3 is fully restored to the grid after a major fire five years ago. The whole Uniper Transparency team was rewarded for its dependable work with a commemorative medal and a letter of thanks from Maxim Shirokov, CEO of Unipro, Uniper's Russian power generation company.

Pavel Livshits, who took over the roll of head of the Transparency Team in Januar 2020 says enthusiastically: "I am honored and happy to have been part of this important, unique and challenging project. Never before have such complex repairs been implemented, and I was able to make my personal contribution to this work."

Thanks to the Transparency Team of 5 members, hurdles and obstacles were disclosed and discussed early on and over the course of the project. "Our tasks consisted of working with the people on site, maintaining in close contact with them and participating in multidisciplinary meetings. We evaluated data and information from various sources and wrote reports for the Unipro and Uniper boards that provided information about the status and success of the project — but also the problems to be solved and risks that arose," explains Pavel.

However, the native Belarusian, who earned his doctorate degree in Israel, knew his own personal task during the project should rise above transparent reporting: "It was about building a bridge between the German and Russian mentality. In both countries, problems are communicated in a completely different way — it was a matter of informing both sides appropriately and adapting to the particularities and needs of the different cultures. However, this is how the Transparency Team has been set up by my colleague Elena Saykova who led it 3 years long before me and had to leave due to maternity leave. From Elena’s experience and expertise I learnt a lot and I’m very thankful for this opportunity."

Throughout the project, no two days were the same: "Completely new tasks arose every day. We encountered new challenges or worked together with people from different disciplines," says Pavel, describing his experiences during the project. "I developed a lot personally and was able to grow. I will continue to apply this new knowledge to other projects in the future. I am also particularly grateful to Cord Landsmann and Peter Maagh from Uniper Technologies Management, who supported me with their expertise during this challenging and exciting time."
