Through the mentoring program to a career-changing decision

Summary

Uniper attracts new, diverse talents via various platforms

After his studies in Industrial Pharmacy in Düsseldorf, the 23-years old Nam Le made a courageous, career-changing decision: The young Vietnamese started a new degree program and joined our Operations Strategy & Analytics (OSA) team as a working student. The reason for this shift was his experience during the mentoring program: Nandan Mishra, Data Engineer at Uniper, is part of the Mentoring Club, a non-profit organization where everyone can share knowledge with other talents and interested parties.

A few months ago, Nam stumbled upon Nandan´s profile on the platform – he was excited and fascinated by the topic and contacted him directly. “We, and especially our Head of OSA, always strive to attract new talents which are diverse and different to our other team members regarding their age or nationalities. We like to empower young and skillful people to take steps into the corporate world”, explained Nandan. “Therefore, I was happy to be a mentor to Nam who has a different mindset because of his educational background. Thanks to his different way of thinking, he has a lot of good and innovative new ideas. During our collaboration, I’ve learnt about the strengths and weaknesses of my mentee and now I know how to shape his skills up.”

During five months, Nam and Nandan had many virtual calls, walks outside and interesting conversations where they shared their knowledge with each other. During the sessions, it turned out the young man already had good competencies on the topics of theoretical Deep Learning/Machine Learning and wanted to work on solving real world energy related problems.

“Now that I have my first job in a company as a working student, I am learning many important skills. I can implement my theoretical knowledge from my studies in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, which I started last year, into practice”, said Nam. There is one important thing, mentor Nandan would like to highlight: “Nobody should ever hesitate to apply to a job at Uniper, even if they are very young or have another cultural or academic background. If you are fascinated and inquisitive, there are always a lot of opportunities to start a career path.”
