Uniper participates in electricity grid extension in Northern Germany

Summary
  • Uniper Technologies wins tender by TSO TenneT
  • First EPCM project award from TenneT
  • Working group with CDM Smith

Uniper Technologies (UTG, Gelsenkirchen), in a working group with the engineering company CDM Smith (Bochum), has won an invitation to tender by transmission system operator TenneT to expand the power grid between Conneforde and the Merzen area in Lower Saxony. The project order covers the overall project management for all services in the areas of engineering, procurement and construction – known as EPCM for short by industry professionals. Uniper will manage the working group and the entire project during the planning and construction phases of the power line. Partner company CDM Smith takes care of the design and construction supervision of two new substations and a cable transition facility. CDM Smith will also be responsible for further environmental planning and for soil and ecological construction supervision. UTG is responsible for the overall project management.

The new 380 kV power line from Conneforde via Cloppenburg to Merzen is planned with a length of around 125 kilometres. The new contract covers the northern section of the power line with a length of approximately 100 km, which is located in the TenneT grid area. The new line is scheduled to go into operation in 2026.

Uniper Chief Operating Officer David Bryson says: “Uniper Technologies being awarded the project is a significant achievement given that the dedicated team was formed only recently. The extension of the high voltage grid is of huge importance for Germany. The energy transition will only be successful if we manage to bring power from renewable energy sources to the places where it is urgently needed. I’m proud that Uniper will be playing a part in this as a project manager.”

Northern Germany plays an important role in the energy transition because a large part of the energy is generated there using wind turbines. In order to bring more electricity from renewable energies to the focal points of consumption, the transmission system operators are currently expanding the existing power grid. Germany has set itself the target of generating around 80% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2050.
