Uniper and Deutsche Bahn conclude long-term contract for the supply of green power

Summary
  • Five-year power purchase agreement to supply Deutsche Bahn with Uniper’s hydropower
  • International contract includes the supply of approximately 88 GWh per year from 2028
  • Agreement brings Deutsche Bahn another step closer to its goal of climate‑neutral mobility

Uniper and Deutsche Bahn are long-standing partners in the field of secure and sustainable power supplies – a good example of this is the contract supplying the Deutsche Bahn for 100 years this year with hydropower from the Walchensee. These two companies’ partnership also encompasses other products and solutions: in March 2024, for example, they also concluded a power purchase agreement (PPA). As part of this five-year agreement, Uniper will be supplying Deutsche Bahn with approx. 88 GWh of green power from Swedish hydropower every year. The company will begin supplying this power from four run-of-river hydropower plants (Borgforsen, Bodum, Fjällsjö, Sil) at Fjällsjöälven in 2028. The cross-border PPA is another component of the companies’ partnership.

As a key partner in the transformation process entailed by the energy transition, Uniper tailors its products and services to the individual needs of its clients. Always in focus: ensuring both greener energy and security of supply. PPAs are an essential part of the company’s product range that help companies to reduce their carbon footprints.

And that’s also true here: Uniper is helping Deutsche Bahn to expand its green power portfolio through hydropower – simultaneously bringing the Group closer to its goal of making the entire corporation greener. Thanks to this long-term agreement, Deutsche Bahn will also benefit from an improved ability to forecast its costs in what continues to be a volatile energy market.

Carsten Poppinga, CCO Uniper

Demand for green power is rising. As a result of the energy transition, we are not only decarbonizing our own power generation, but are also making more green power available to our customers today, so that they can meet their own climate targets. Renewable energy – such as the Group’s own hydropower – is one of the most important components of the energy transition. We are delighted that our PPA is helping to accelerate the decarbonization of Deutsche Bahn, because it is only by working together that we can effectively achieve the energy transition.

About Uniper

Düsseldorf-based Uniper is an international energy company with activities in more than 40 countries. The company and its roughly 7,000 employees make an important contribution to supply security in Europe, particularly in its core markets of Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

Uniper’s operations encompass power generation in Europe, global energy trading, and a broad gas portfolio. Uniper procures gas—including liquefied natural gas (LNG)—and other energy sources on global markets. The company owns and operates gas storage facilities with a total capacity of more than 7 billion cubic meters.

Uniper intends to be completely carbon-neutral by 2040. Uniper aims for its installed power generating capacity to be more than 80% zero-carbon by 2030. To achieve this, the company is transforming its power plants and facilities and investing in flexible, dispatchable power generating units. Uniper is already one of Europe’s largest operators of hydropower plants and is helping further expand solar and wind power, which are essential for a more sustainable and secure future. The company is progressively expanding its gas portfolio to include green gases like hydrogen and biomethane and aims to convert to these gases over the long term.

Uniper is a reliable partner for communities, municipal utilities, and industrial enterprises for planning and implementing innovative, lower-carbon solutions on their decarbonization journey. Uniper is a hydrogen pioneer, is active worldwide along the entire hydrogen value chain, and is conducting projects to make hydrogen a mainstay of the energy supply.
