Measures for a robust electricity system 2035
Uniper Sweden's Priority Actions for a Robust Electricity System 2035
Uniper Sweden has produced a report with proposed actions for the next term aimed at creating a robust electricity system by 2035. It highlights three priority areas for increased supply security, better investment conditions, and a data center sector that contributes to the energy transition.
A basic prerequisite for Uniper and this report is that Sweden must continue to push forward the development to transform the energy system. It is both possible and necessary.
Three priority action areas to strengthen Sweden's energy system
Ensure the security of supply of the electricity system
Create long-term markets for electricity production and use
Let data centers contribute to the energy transition
Security of supply of the electricity system
Sweden needs more predictable and flexible electricity production to meet growing electricity consumption and at the same time enable continued expansion of weather-dependent power sources.
We propose, among other things:
- Increased requirements for island operation capability and local electricity readiness.
- Technology-neutral regulation that stimulates both grid expansion and alternative solutions for increased flexibility.
- Better conditions for investments in predictable flexible production.
56 Long-term markets for electricity production and use
For investments to be successful, stable and predictable conditions are required. Today's electricity market makes it difficult for both producers and electricity customers to sign long-term contracts.
We propose, among other things:
- A gradual reduction in the number of electricity zones.
- Public procurement of long-term power purchase agreements.
- State credit guarantees that facilitate long-term agreements between private actors.
- Market-based models that enable investments in both new and existing fossil-free production.
Data centers' contribution to the energy transition
Data centers are a rapidly growing sector with the potential to create significant value for Sweden. At the same time, this development means a significantly increased demand for electricity.
To ensure that this development strengthens the energy system, we propose that data centers be given incentives to contribute to the expansion of new fossil-free electricity production.
A robust energy system is the foundation for Sweden's future competitivenessskraft
The climate transition, electrification and the changing security situation are placing new demands on the energy system. Sweden needs more electricity production, stronger electricity grids, better market conditions and increased security of supply – all at the same time.
Our starting point is simple: the energy transition must continue. It is both possible and necessary. With the right reforms, Sweden can strengthen its competitiveness, reduce its emissions and build a robust electricity system that meets the needs of the future.
