Nuclear power

Nuclear power, which meets about 30 % of Sweden’s power demand, plays an important role in its energy supply. Uniper is the majority owner of the nuclear power plant (NPP) Oskarshamn and a minority owner of the Ringhals and Forsmark NPPs. We also own Barsebäck, Sweden’s first commercial NPP, which has been decommissioned and is currently being dismantled. We develop and invest in today's nuclear power to ensure continued efficient operation for decades to come.

Hydropower

Together with nuclear power, hydroelectricity meets Sweden’s baseload needs. Our low-carbon hydro plants provide both stability and flexibility to the country’s energy system.

Uniper is the third-largest hydropower producer in Sweden. From Sundsvall, we manage 74 run-of-river plants, located from Lycksele in the North to Kristianstad in the South.

The plants have a combined capacity of about 1,600 MW and an average annual output of 8 TWh; this is about 12% of Sweden's total hydropower production.

The power reserve

Karlshamnsverket is an oil-fired peak and reserve power plant. It’s situated in southern Sweden, which requires more capacity than other parts of the country. Karlshamnsverket is the production portion of the power reserve, which is procured by Svenska kraftnät for the winter period. The power plant can also deliver other ancillary services that contribute to securing the electricity supply.

Open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs)

We own and operate seven open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) in the South of Sweden, with a combined installed capacity of 500 MW.

The largest machine is G12 in Halmstad, commissioned in 1993. The other OCGTs were commissioned between 1971 and 1974.

The OCGTs are part of the Swedish disturbance reserve and run on light fuel oil.

Hydrogen

Uniper is a pioneer in hydrogen gas. We are active all over the world along the entire value chain for hydrogen and run projects to make hydrogen play a decisive role in the energy supply.

Hydropower has many advantages. It has near-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, while providing a reliable electricity supply at a competitive price. Hydropower is renewable, because the water that is utilized by the power plant is not consumed, but constantly returned in the form of precipitation.

Nuclear power plays an important role in stabilizing Sweden’s electricity generation. Uniper takes total responsibility for our participation in Swedish nuclear power.

Hydrogen is not an energy source in itself, but just like electricity it is an energy carrier. It can therefore not be determined to be renewable, fossil-free or fossil without knowledge about the production process – it can be any of these things, depending entirely on how it is manufactured.

Our global presence

We continue to strengthen our presence in key markets, develop innovative solutions and acquire companies in prioritized areas. Uniper solutions are sold to over 100 countries and we currently operate in over 40 countries.
