Uniper was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on September 12, 2016. However, Uniper Sweden rests on a proud tradition and demonstrable energy expertise, with more than 100 years of electricity generation.
We ensure Sweden has baseload power
As a part of the international energy group Uniper, we in Sweden are a major electricity producer for the Swedish base industry, with power plants around the country for climate-smart hydro and nuclear power in addition to reserve power. Our powerplants play an important role in stabilizing Sweden’s electricity supply, which is the foundation for society’s welfare and industry’s competitiveness.
In Sweden, nuclear power and hydropower form the foundation of the energy system and together account for 74% of Swedish electricity generation. In terms of hydropower, we’re the third-largest producer in Sweden. Our 76 wholly or jointly owned hydropower plants, ranging from Lycksele in the north to Kristianstad in the south, account for about 12% of Sweden’s total hydropower production. As for nuclear power, the Uniper group is a co-owner in all three of Sweden’s active nuclear power plants: OKG in Oskarshamn, Ringhals, and Forsmark.
In case of an acute electricity shortage, such as from high electricity consumption during extreme cold, there is a reserve available via our power plants and gas turbines. The authority Svenska kraftnät has tasked us with starting up these turbines in case of just such an emergency, so that our society can continue to function.
Uniper is a reliable partner for communities, municipal utilities, and industrial enterprises for planning and implementing innovative, lower-carbon solutions on their decarbonization journey. Uniper is a hydrogen pioneer, is active worldwide along the entire hydrogen value chain, and is conducting projects to make hydrogen a mainstay of the energy supply.

Uniper delivers reliable and stable electricity – every hour of the day
Electricity is actually a highly effective energy carrier and can instantly be transported tens of thousands of kilometers and is therefore totally unique compared with fossil fuels. Compared with other countries, Sweden has a high per capita electricity consumption. This is due in part to our cold climate, but our large electricity-intensive industries also increase consumption. Society and industry need stable access to electricity to function every hour of the day.

Hydropower has many advantages. It has near-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, while providing a reliable electricity supply at a competitive price. Hydropower is renewable, because the water that is utilized by the powerplant is not consumed, but constantly returned in the form of precipitation.
Nuclear power plays an important role in stabilizing Sweden’s electricity generation. Uniper takes total responsibility for our participation in Swedish nuclear power.
