Uniper has, yesterday (5 August) submitted a Development Consent Order (DCO) application to the Planning Inspectorate for a new combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station, with carbon capture technology, at its Connah’s Quay site in Flintshire.
Known as the Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power (CQLCP) project; if consented and developed the new power station would be capable of providing up to 1.38GW of low carbon power, to help meet the growing need for electricity, whenever it is required.
As a power station with a generation capacity of more than 350MW, Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power is classed as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP). An NSIP is a major proposal considered by the Government to be of such importance that the permission to build and operate needs to be confirmed at national level by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. It therefore requires a Development Consent Order.
In accordance with the DCO consenting process, Uniper has carried out a programme of consultation and engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including national agencies, local authorities, businesses, community groups and local residents. The feedback received during this consultation and how it has influenced our plans, forms part of our DCO application submission.
Following the DCO application submission, the Planning Inspectorate will have 28 days to review the submission to consider whether to accept it for examination. If our application is accepted, the CQLCP project will move into the pre-examination phase. We would announce acceptance, allowing the public and stakeholders to register with the Planning Inspectorate as interested parties by submitting relevant representations. The Planning Inspectorate would post details on its website about how to register nearer the time.
