Where mining took place for seven decades, we are creating new landscapes for local recreation, residential and commercial use, and bringing nature back.
We take pride in our responsibility to create effective solutions for the consequences of mining. To this end, we work closely with local communities, the district administration, and the Upper Palatinate Lake District Association. The recultivation project, covering a total area of 13 km², will be completed in 2030. By the end of the 1990s, two large open-cast mining areas north and south of Wackersdorf had been largely flooded with water, creating the extensive, multi-purpose Upper Palatinate Lake District, which enjoys great popularity as a water sports area beyond the region. Recultivation of the former open-cast lignite mining area between Wackersdorf and Steinberg am See, the Westfeld, has also been completed since the end of 2022. Today, extensive areas of nutrient-poor grassland prevail there. This has created an ecologically valuable area for nature and species conservation, which can also be developed for other uses, such as energy parks and commercial enterprises. The next chapter begins with the preservation of the area of the former “Loiblweiher” open-cast mining site for further use for local recreation, commerce, and nature.
