We make our portfolio fit for the future

Uniper strives to support the path to a more sustainable and decarbonized world and to make a significant contribution to the energy transition.

In March 2020, Uniper unveiled a new strategy that envisions a step-by-step transformation into a greener company while enhancing Uniper's value. The implementation of this strategy will be driven by means of concrete plans for each of the business segments. Under the new strategy, Uniper is committed to becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.

We focus on growth investments

New growth area renewables generation

To achieve its ambitious transformation, Uniper will focus on two new growth areas: renewables generation and hydrogen.

In the area of power generation with renewables, Uniper plans to expand significantly. For this purpose, Uniper has a diversified platform for the development of solar and onshore wind projects in its European core markets, with the capacity to develop 1 GW per year to ready-to-build status by the end of 2025 at the latest. At the same time, Uniper has a steadily growing pipeline of 3 GW (as of November 2022) of projects ready-to-build by 2026.

In addition, Uniper has been active for some time in trading and structuring long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) from renewables. With these PPAs, we are accompanying the increasing demand from industrial and wholesale customers for products from sustainable energy sources.

New growth area hydrogen

Uniper has had extensive experience in the operation of hydrogen plants for several years. The company was one of the first German utilities to produce green hydrogen based on electrolysis processes in two demonstration plants. Uniper is currently developing an extensive range of projects for green and blue hydrogen in its core European markets. Electrolysis plants of several hundred megawatts are being planned in order to be able to supply the future demand for sustainable hydrogen from industry and also for alternative energies in the transport sector. On this basis, an electrolyzer capacity of at least 1 gigawatt is to be created by 2030. In addition, Uniper, as a globally operating energy trader, is working on establishing an international import supply chain for hydrogen in order to help fill the supply gap expected for Europe in the medium term. In this environment, Uniper is very well positioned in the growing hydrogen market with its infrastructure and excellent procurement, optimization, trading and risk management capabilities.
